Critical Thinking and Personal Environmental Scans 2
How to Get an MBA in Life
If you have a
pension plan, have you even tried to read it? Some might have it memorized and
are counting down the days, the rest do not have an inclination nor the time to
determine what this might provide.
And you know
what this might mean. Actually arranging for an appointment with human
resources and trying to figure out what is going on. This might take time that
you do not have, but consider that you are reading the newspaper on a continual
basis about people that have absolutely no connection with yourself, and you
are not prepared to put in the time to read up about yourself. This is one of
the times to reset your priorities.
The second step
in our path is to select and distill data. We have to cast off irrelevancies to
get at the main issues of a complex subject. This is not as easy as it seems.
You have to be relatively well read in a particular topic in order to determine
what is relevant, and what is not relevant.
This was of
particular interest when a co-worker advocates a certain course of action based
on the one contract law course that he took during university. To someone armed
only with a hammer, everything looks like a nail. A little bit of knowledge can
be an incredibly dangerous thing. The co-worker would have been correct
normally in his recommendation except for the fact that trust law dictated a
separate course of action, an area of which he knew nothing about. Therefore,
you have to read and read and read. Not only to understand your topic, but to
understand adjacent topics. This is the only way to provide some sort of
context to your topic, that is the interrelationship between what you are
discussing and what it is that you are trying to find out.
Specialization
can lead into these isolated pockets of knowledge when everyone wants to use
their own favored hammer. The hammer that they have worked with for decades and
they know every nuisance and behavior. However, sometimes it just comes time to
use a screw.
